Brachypelma hamorii - Mexican Red knee (5-6cm)
Brachypelma hamorii, also known as the Mexican red knee tarantula, is a popular and striking species of tarantula that is native to western Mexico. This species is highly sought after by tarantula enthusiasts due to its beautiful coloration and docile temperament.
B. hamorii is a medium-sized tarantula, with females reaching a leg span of up to 6 inches (15 cm) and males being slightly smaller. The carapace (the hard shell covering the cephalothorax) is dark brown or black with a red-orange stripe down the center, while the abdomen is black with red-orange patches. The legs are black with distinctive red-orange bands, and the pedipalps (the two appendages near the mouth used for sensing and manipulating prey) are a bright orange color.
In the wild, B. hamorii can be found in arid regions and scrubland, where they spend most of their time in burrows or under rocks. They are nocturnal and feed primarily on insects, but may also consume small rodents and lizards.
As pets, B. hamorii are relatively easy to care for and have a gentle disposition, making them a popular choice for beginners. They require a terrarium that is at least twice the length of their leg span, with a substrate of coconut fiber or peat moss. A shallow water dish should be provided, and the terrarium should be kept at a temperature between 75-85°F (24-29°C) and a humidity level of 60-70%. B. hamorii should be fed a diet of crickets, roaches, and other appropriately sized insects.
Overall, Brachypelma hamorii is a stunning and fascinating species of tarantula that is well-suited for both experienced and novice keepers alike.
